Whenever you want something to sounds really cool, translate it into Latin. When I tripped over this phrase, abusus non tollit usum, I had to find out more about it. Roughly translated, it means misuse does not preclude proper use.
Throughout this journey away from pornography and toward Jesus, it could be easy to say that sex is bad. Seriously, look at the pain and heartache caused in the world because of the misuse of sex. Pornography, pedophilia, rape, incest, molestation, a host of psychological problems, and divorce. It makes you wonder if sex is even worth it. Sex is good, but is it worth all of the abuse and misuse of it in the world.
The answer is a resounding YES. God made it good. Sex was created before the fall and like butterflies, kittens, and sunrises, it remains good after the fall. It has been misused, but misuse does not preclude proper use.
Like anything that humans touch, our sin continues to distort sex into something that is gross and harmful. Part of us as the church being a light in the world will be us delighting in sex in a way that does not hurt us. The smile of a wife who is cared for by her husband preaches so much in a world with so much misery. Guys, by God’s grace, we can be that light.
On that note, all rise. and repeat after me.
And now for the man’s prayer.
Now sit down.
P.S. Remember, I’m pulling for you. We’re all in this together.
